9 VISCOM (Visual Communication)

What is this subject about?
Would you love the opportunity to design your very own t shirt graphics and also have the opportunity to win a$5000 cash prize (1st place) or receive royalties for producing a T-Shirt design that will be sold as part of an online retail store (Top Ten).  

Drawing and computer design are essential to all successful designs therefore we will develop your two and three dimensional drawing skills along with your capacity to use design software so that we will have you creating / designing like a professional.   

To achieve this we will introduce you to the world of design and use of the design process to research, develop and refine a range of highly creative design solutions. An emphasis upon design terminology and use of the elements and principles of design will be explored so that you will be able create with flair and understanding. 

Drawing is emphasized in this unit so that your designs are able to evolve from a selection of initial idea / visualisation sketches through to a comprehensively finished final presentation.
With the aid of a computer we will also use the Adobe Creative Suite design software (Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator) to action our designs and present work that is professional and exciting.  

Now you get to choose:
Design is often categorized under the headings of Communication design, Environmental design or Industrial design therefore we will give you the opportunity to choose a design task from your preferred area of interest and produce a folio of work that covers these skills.

You could be a communication / graphics designer and create a logo, poster, ticket and VIP lanyard for a music festival or a logo, packaging and advertising for a new organic eatery.  
If architecture, or Interior design is your passion then environmental design is for you. You could choose to design your own holiday house, art gallery, hairdressing salon or day spa. 
For budding product or fashion designers, Industrial design is for you. You may choose to develop and design your own swimwear / athletics wear or a new pair of fashionable shoes. 

A dress and a hat for the ‘Spring Racing Carnival’ could be your task or the design and creation of a product that is a rival to the ‘Nutribullet’, an ‘iPhone or IPad’,  ‘Coach handbags’, ‘Beats headphones’, Apple earbuds, a PS4 or Xbox720. You get to choose!!!!

What are we going to be studying?

* In this unit we teach you to draw with confidence therefore you will be introduced to a broad selection of 2D and 3 D drawing methods such as orthogonal (2D), paraline and perspective drawing (3D).

* You will also be required to develop a selection of design solutions that will require you to make use of the steps of the design process to research, develop and then refine a final outcome.

* Application of appropriate design software will also be covered as many students prefer to draw and design with the aid of a computer.

Where does this subject go?

Careers – If you are interested in being a graphic designer, industrial designer, architect, interior designer, landscape designer, visual merchandiser or even a fashion designer many of the skills you will learn in this unit are a lead into Year 10 Viscom and Digital Design and in turn VCE Visual Communication and Design Units 1 – 4, and a possible career in the Arts.  It is worth noting that there are a great deal of university courses that cater for creative students that have an interest in design, promotion and advertising and Viscom is the ideal lead into this.

Apart from the careers listed above this subject is advantageous if you’re looking at these careers: Digital / Web design, Advertising, Illustration, Typographic design, Set design, Exhibition / Display design, Engineering Design, Production design, Animation, Art and Design teacher, University lecturer, Textile designer, Photographer or Cartoonist.

Pathway – This unit is a great lead in to Year 10 VCE Visual Communication & Design. 

This unit should be considered in combination with Year 10 Digital Design.
