VCE Chemistry

What is this subject about?

VCE Chemistry is a central science that will allow students to apply theories and concepts to explain, analyse and make predictions about the chemical reactions that occur around them.

What are we going to be studying?

The Chemistry course is divided up into four units.  Units 1 & 2 should be completed in Year 11 and Units 3 & 4 in Year 12.

The course can be described by the following framing questions that reflect the inquiry nature of this Chemistry course:

Unit 1: How can the diversity of materials be explained?
Unit 2: How do chemical reactions shape the natural world?
Unit 3: How can design and innovation help to optimise chemical processes?
Unit 4: How are carbon-based compounds designed for purpose?

While studying Chemistry you can expect to work individually and also as part of an inquiry team.  You will undertake memory work, problem solving, inquiry based practicals, and train to carryout experiments with an expertise appropriate for secondary school.  All of these skills would be an asset to anyone pursuing further study in the areas of Health or Science.
