10 Drama Production

What is this subject about?

This course offers students the opportunity to put on a full-scale class production, which they will perform for a public audience. Students follow a fool-proof process that allows them to learn what it takes to put on a successful show. Students also have the opportunity to make design choices in the areas of costume, makeup, props, set, sound, lighting and publicity.

In addition, students see a professional production and learn how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of what they have seen.

What are we going to be studying?

The play will be selected based on the people who choose the subject. We aim to choose a play that is fun and suitable for all ages. In previous years, productions have included: The Wizard of Oz, Dr. Doolittle, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Daisy Pulls it Off and Beauty is a Beast.

The performance students will attend will depend upon what is playing during the semester. In previous years, classes have gone to see Storm Boy, 1984 and Hamlet.

Where does this subject go?

Students who study Drama Production at Year 10 can also do Backstage (the other Year 10 elective). In VCE, students can study Theatre Studies, which builds on and develops the skills and knowledge gained in Year 10.

The skills gained in Theatre Studies are useful in the workplace and in future studies. Theatre Studies improves students’ creativity, organisational skills, time-management and confidence. Students also develop their ability to think critically, solve problems and analyse information.
