Clonard Wins 2022 Herald Sun Shield

On Thursday 28 July the Clonard Intermediate Football team took on Ballarat Clarendon College in a blockbuster showdown at North Port Oval in Port Melbourne. Both teams came into the contest boasting very successful records, yet only one team would walk away victorious.

The first quarter saw Clarendon College on top for most of the quarter with the ball spending most of the time in their forward half. Clonard College’s backline stood up tirelessly allowing only one goal despite multiple entries. Macy Farvis and Molly Bilyk were key in defence early. Charlie Hoey kicked a vital goal in the last 90 seconds of the quarter to draw level at the first break.

The second quarter was when Clonard put their stamp on the game. Stella Huxtable and Lucy Marescuk put on a centre clearance clinic getting first use from Charlie Hoey who dominated in the ruck. Cavalle Boxer was a beneficiary of the dominance in the middle and kicked an early goal in the second quarter from 40m out to give Clonard a 14-7 lead. Stella Huxtable and best on ground player Lucy Marescuk both also kicked goals to give Clonard the strong 27-7 lead at half time.

Ballarat Clarendon College came out hard early in the third kicking the first two goals. Clonard weathered the strong and wrestled back momentum as Charlie Hoey kicked a crucial goal midway through the third quarter to settle the team.

Clonard took a 17 point lead into the final break. The last quarter was a real test of resilience and teamwork with the ball rebounding back and forth. Clarendon only managed to kick one goal in the dying minutes as Clonard College went on to win the game 36-26 and for the first time in the school’s history, win the Herald Sun Shield. Coaches Matthew Wapling and Bridget Taylor could not have been prouder of how the students represented themselves and the College throughout all competitions.
