Justice in Action (Cook up)

Student Reflection – Talarah, Year 11

On Wednesday, a group of students and staff had the special opportunity to gather together with the shared interest in pursuing justice in our community, which came in the form of chopping vegetables and mixing pots to go towards a comfortable dinnertime for the Outpost, an organisation who in the last financial year provided over 62,000 meals and drinks to those who came to them for help.

As part of the Justice in Action initiative, a group of us had the opportunity to cook meals for people in our local community who are impacted by the economic crises of our time. We prepared dishes like Kransky casserole, banana bread and cottage pie, warm and filling meals made with care.

Knowing that these meals would be going to people experiencing homelessness or hardship made the experience really heartfelt, because we knew our small impact as students was making a massive impact on families and individuals going through tough times. It’s so easy to take things like a warm meal for granted, but this initiative reminded all of us that not everyone has that same security and it’s important to dedicate our time to thinking and acting for positive social change.

We were honoured to have been a part of something bigger than us and make a positive impact on our community.
