On Thursday 23 May, the senior Clonard football squad headed out to St Joseph’s Football Club in Geelong to compete in the annual GISSA Senior Girls Tournament.
The eight competing schools were placed in two pools comprising of four schools each, the four schools would play each other once in 2 x 12 minute half games. The top two teams from each pool would play off in the final. Clonard were placed in a pool alongside Covenant College, Christian College and Kardinia International.
Our first match against Covenant began as a tight contest but once we managed our first goal via Jayme L we were able to take control and run out 4:2:26 to 0:0:0 victors. Our best players for the game were Jayme, Sophie G and Alice B.
After a strong start to the day, we went into our second game against Christian College feeling confident and ready. Jayme continued on her strong form in the ruck and was supported by captain Lucy M and Alex S who won the ball frequently and were able to propel us forward from the midfield on countless occasions leading us to a 37 point victory.
Our third game against Kardinia was similar to our first gritty win, it took a little time for the game to open up with both teams strong at the contest and making it hard to move the ball with any real freedom. It was however Jayme and Lucy leading the way with wonderful support form Ella B who eventually broke the game open with their clean and decisive skills and movement. We ran out 22-0 victors and headed into the final against Sacred Heart feeling very good about our efforts thus far.
Unfortunately, the final was cut short due to an unfortunate injury resulting in a Sacred Heart victory who were two goals in front when the game was called off. Sacred Heart will now go onto represent GISSA in the Herald Sun Shield Division 1 competition.
While we will not advance, our girls were amazing on the day, playing with grit, class and most of all a wonderful spirit that makes sport what it should be. Well done girls, you made your College proud.
