Student Attendance and Achievement

Student attendance plays a crucial role in ensuring academic success and maintaining engagement and overall progress. At least 90% attendance at school is important for students to engage with the content, practice key skills, maintain a sense of belonging and connection to their school community and achieve success in learning. Student attendance at 80% equates to missing one day of school each week leading to a significant impact on student progress.

Attendance and Achievement at Clonard: Does Attendance Matter?

At Clonard College, we have always emphasised the importance of regular attendance as a cornerstone of academic success. Recent analysis of our attendance and achievement data from previous years has provided insightful evidence supporting this belief.

The Relationship Between Attendance and Achievement

Our analysis revealed a moderate strength relationship between attendance and achievement. Specifically, 30% of the variation in student achievement can be explained purely by variation in attendance. This finding underscores the significant impact that regular attendance has on academic performance.

Predictive Insights

The data analysis provided some compelling predictive insights:

  • A student with 0% attendance is predicted to have an assessment average of just 11%.
  • For every extra day a week a student attends, their achievement increases by 12.5%.
  • A student with 100% attendance is predicted to have an assessment average of 74%.

These statistics highlight the critical role that consistent attendance plays in achieving academic success. They serve as a powerful reminder that being present in the classroom is not just about attendance; it’s about engagement, learning, and growth.

Our Commitment to Attendance

As the Attendance and Engagement Leader at Clonard College, my role is to support and strengthen student attendance by implementing effective systems, monitoring attendance patterns, and working closely with students, families, and staff to address any challenges that arise. When attendance concerns are identified, I support staff in providing early intervention through communication with families, coordinating Student Learning Review meetings, and developing individualised attendance and engagement support plans. Together, we are working to ensure every student has the best opportunity for academic success, engagement, and growth.

Reminders

As Term 2 progresses, we wish to emphasise the importance of students arriving punctually to school and to each of their classes. Should a student be absent, we kindly ask that the school be notified through PAM. Alternatively, absences may be communicated by contacting the Student Office via telephone or email.

Please note the following reminders –

  • All students arriving late to school must sign in at the office before proceeding to class.
  • Students leaving school early must always sign out at the office
  • Whenever possible, please provide advance notice for early pickups to help us ensure a smooth process.
