Each year the Clonard library celebrates World Poetry Day on March 21. It is a UNESCO celebration and promotion of poetry which has been occurring since 1999.
This year the library ran a poetry writing competition where students were invited to write a poem of 14 lines or more on a topic of their choice. Year 8 student, Po L, was the winner of the competition with Chelsea P receiving an encouragement award.
Apart from promoting poetry books in the library with colourful displays, the library also ran a Blind Date with a poetry book competition, where students could borrow a poetry book that was sealed in a brown paper bag, and they could only discover their surprise once the paper bag was opened. This activity proved to be a hit with students.
In conjunction with the library, Aspire Leaders organised an Open Mic poetry reading in front of Clonard House on Friday March 21. Staff and students read poems, some of their own, to students enjoying the sunshine along with many interested families who were part of the Open Day tours which were occurring at the time.
Overall, it was a great day to take in some poetry at Clonard.
