The United Nations was created in 1945 as the horrors of World War II were revealed. This unit looks at how the world (through the UN) attempts to deal with conflict and issues such as human rights, poverty and development. Students will analyse the effectiveness of the United Nations intervention in various conflicts as well as its capacity to improve a society’s quality of life; such as in North Korea. By the end of this unit students should be able to:
• Develop an understanding of the intended role of the UN
• Make reasonable judgements on how effective the UN has been in achieving its aims – as well as
• What factors contributed to the success (or otherwise) of its campaigns.
